Daawat serves up a delicious Diwali menu!
Diwali is the festival of light, acknowledging good over evil, knowledge over ignorance and is celebrated with good food, family and friends. A couple of weeks ago I was pleased to get a sneak preview of the Diwali menu at Daawat, found in the Strand Palace Hotel, London. It really was a fantastic celebration with an array of delicious dishes designed by Head Chef Asharaf Valappil. With a penchant for taking regional Keralan dishes and adding a fine dining twist the result was a veritable feast. Served up on sharing plates, we dove in to the many plates and the consensus around the table was that they were all delicious!
There are a range of dishes to tuck in to with starters, mains and sides in abundance. In the Pratham Arambam section there are Spinach & Kale Chat, Chilli Mili Wings and Masala Uttapam with Lamb Pepper Fry. Of these I really enjoyed the wings, the spice was on point and there was plenty of sticky sauce to lick off my fingers, yum!
For the mains Spicy Andhra Curry with Black Peppercorn & Shallots, Malai Jinga (Tiger prawn cooked in a creamy coconut sauce) and Saag Tandoori Paneer were placed in front of us. For me the paneer was my pick which is unusual as I am a dedicated carnivore and whilst the curries were delicious my taste is for more spice, I like it HOT.
The Diwali menu is available til the 3rd of November at £26.95 per person. I thoroughly enjoyed my night at Daawat. Not only was the food great but so is the dining room. Beautifully appointed and serving tasty cocktails as previously tasted in the Gin Palace bar elsewhere in the hotel I look forward to returning for another taste of Keralan cuisine. It certainly makes a nice change from my local curry house on a Friday night.
