Review – Kettner’s – Soho, London

Ms Food Blogger

I love finding gems and recently I was invited to a cocktail masterclass at Kettner’s in Soho, London. Presided over by bar manager Jason Palmer, we were introduced to the wonders of professional mixology. When I worked the bars many years ago cocktails were pretty much chuck stuff in a mixer, give it a good blast, job done. My how times have changed!
I learnt the correct way to make an Old Fashioned, which done properly takes around 10 minutes and believe me is definitely worth the wait, how to muddle a balanced mojito and best of all how to ‘throw’ a martini. After each demo we were let loose to try and recreate the drinks which we could then consume if we so wished. Needless to say there was a lot of laughter and just a few ever so slightly merry people by the night’s end.
One thing I definitely love about London is its history and Kettner’s has played host to many famous patrons since it opened in 1867. Made up of 4 Georgian town houses it boasts a bar, restaurant and several private dining rooms The room that our event was held in is known as The Apartment and was where Edward VII would rendezvous with his mistress, Lillie Langtry. The room has a secret door going down to a tunnel that leads under the road to the theatre where Lillie would perform. What I wouldn’t give to have a sneaky peek!
The style of Kettner’s is definitely glamorous. Retaining much of its original decor it has a wonderful yet homely feel to it. Whilst I have yet to eat in the restaurant I have been to the Cocktail and Champagne Bar on the ground floor. There are little alcoves, great for a catchup with friends, or you can hang out in the main area and watch the master mixologists at work. Mixing a great cocktail is now an art form in its own right and there is nothing better than watching a professional make you your perfect drink. If you are looking for pre/post theatre drinks or somewhere to unwind with friends, you should definitely check this place out. If you need any further incentive there is also happy hour on cocktails (50% off) Sunday to Thursday from 8pm til late. Personally, I can’t wait to go back for another Porn Star Martini, delish!

PS: It’s possible they may host more cocktail masterclasses in the future, if they do I’ll be sure to let you know!
