Recipe – Toffee Apples

Toffee apples are a great treat for the whole family. Rather than making the ‘traditional’ toffee apple why not try some of these suggestions? Anything you can put into a cookie can be put onto an apple, to make a unique treat the only limit is your imagination!

Toffe Apple Recipe:

3 cups sugar

1 tbsp white vinegar

1 tbsp butter

1/2 cup water

1/2 tsp cream of tartar

few drops food colouring

8 apples

8 wooden sticks or skewers

Place sugar, butter and water into a saucepan, heat gently and stir constantly until the sugar has dissolved. Add cream of tartar and food colouring and bring to the boil. Keep boiling until the hard-crack stage*. Wash and wipe dry the apples whilst the mixture is boiling. Place wooden sticks thru the bottom of the apples. Taking the pan off the heat tilt the pan and dip the apples into the toffee giving them a full covering. Decorate (careful, it’s going to be hot!) by dropping/dipping your choice of coating onto the toffee. Place covered apples onto a sheet of baking paper or buttered dish with the sticks protruding upright. Leave until cold and set.

Topping Suggestions:

Diced dried fruit


Melted chocolate

Chocolate chunks

Sesame seeds

Crushed pistachios

Crushed biscuits (mmmm gingernuts)

The only limit is your tastebuds!

* Hard crack stage: Place some very cold water into a cup/glass. Drop a small amount of the toffee into the water. The toffee should seperate into threads that are hard but not brittle.
