Sssshhhh……come closer, no closer than that, I’m going to tell you about my latest discovery!

Down that lovely cobbled street named Church St there is a gorgeous tea room and bakehouse called ‘Sweetie Pies’. Why haven’t I found this place before? Probably because I get side-tracked by The Fox and then it’s all over rover. I can promise you though that if you can resist the temptation of The Fox and walk just a bit further along, you’ll be rewarded by great coffee and fantastic cupcakes in this little gem of a setting.

Elyes and Rebecca opened Sweetie Pies nearly 3 years ago. Looking for somewhere with a boutique atmosphere in a village setting, Church St was the perfect location. Their motto is ‘We work in a small kitchen, with small equipment, in small batches’. This ethos is reflected in the delicious and vast array of baking all done by Rebecca’s skilled hands. They first started out catering to the on-line market and progressed to a market stall before finally opening in Twickenham.

The atmosphere and eclectic surroundings are certainly worthy of what one would expect in a boutique-style tea room. From the rose-patterned bone china to the silver spoons and cake-forks, it really is very sweet. The staff are super friendly with big smiles and ready to help with any queries. Whilst the shop itself is quite small (seating for 11) there is a pretty courtyard out the back which is open in the summer months and looks to be a great sun-trap.’

It’s not hard to find great coffee around so I tend to measure a place by their skill in making a decent hot chocoloate. Not that luke-warm kind that you get in a lot of high street chains, but a real honest to goodness ‘hot’ chocolate. I wasn’t disappointed, not only was it hot (hurrah) and topped with tiny marshmallows but there were no cans of squirty, instant whipped cream in sight (double hurrah!) The cupcakes were mouth-wateringly fresh and nearly too good looking to eat (I said nearly). As well as plenty of cakes to choose from there are sandwiches, paninis and other light lunch offerings, so, perfect for your office lunch break too.

Sweetie Pies also offer you the chance to hire their premises for birthday parties (what kid wouldn’t love a cupcake party?) for a nominal hire-charge of £50:00. Outside catering is also available whether you need a personalised birthday cake, a glorious wedding cake or some designer cupcakes it can all be organised by going in to have a chat with baker extroadinaire Rebecca.

So go on, get yourself down Church St, don’t get waylaid and enjoy some of the best coffee and cake in town!
