Review – Yeung Cheng – Chinatown, London
The strapline for my blog is ‘finding the best places to splash your cash’. You may think that that means I only go to fine-dining restaurants and hotels with Michelin stars or celebrity chefs. While it’s true that I do get to experience a lot of these places, I also love finding those that are not so well known but provide amazing food at affordable prices. One such place recently was Yeung Cheng, recommended by a fellow foodie we came here after a night wine-tasting in Soho. It’s not the most glamorous of settings, in fact it is pretty ordinary looking but the food is what makes people from all walks of life fill up this restaurant.
Situated down a side street of Chinatown and close to Leicester Square tube station this place is easy to find and the smells upon walking through the door had me salivating, literally. I love Asian food so I was really looking forward to getting my fix.
First up was my benchmark for any eastern eatery, dumplings. These were not cooked in my favourite style though but I think that was more down to our ordering than anything else. I like potsticker dumplings as opposed to deep fried but still, they were really tasty especially when dipped in Chinese vinegar.
For the mains we chose the roasted duck noodle soup and the seafood combo with dry noodles. Both delicious and generous portions. If you’re weary of bones then be forewarned that the duck is cooked on the bone, adds to the flavour of course. My seafood noodles were such a size that I really couldn’t finish so took the leftovers home to eat later yum!
A modest looking restaurant with quick service this is a great find. After talking to my neighbours it turns out that they have been here many times before and loved it so that’s four of us that recommend this place. I will definitely be back next time I am in Chinatown and need some decent, hearty food although next time I’m ordering potstickers for sure, I myself make mean potstickers so the challenge is on!
