Review – Zayane (Moroccan) – Notting Hill, Golborne Rd, London
In the heart of Notting Hill is the newly launched Zayane with a feast of Moroccan dishes to tantalise the palate. Head Chef Chris Bower has created a modern menu with the authentic tastes and smells to metaphorically transport you to the shores and souks of Morocco.
Chris Bower previously worked in Michelin establishments The Ivy and Thakeray’s (Tunbridge Wells). Incorporating contemporary culinary techniques with the best of British seasonal fayre and Moroccan sourced spices results in a tasty and well executed menu stacked with flavour and textures.
The restaurant is owned by Moroccan born Meryem Mortell who, inspired by the colours and textiles of her homeland, has designed a vibrant setting in which to enjoy the many dishes on offer. Decorated with hues of gold, orange and royal blue and accentuated with clever lighting and candles it provides a relaxing yet spirited atmosphere befitting Meryem’s hometown of Casablanca.
Our evening began with vodka and passion fruit cocktails (Meryem’s favourite) closely followed by an array of breads and dips. I, for one, love eating with my hands so this was right up my street.
My chosen dishes for the evening were the Pan-Fried Scallop Chermoula to start and the Saffron Marinated Atlantic Cod for the main. I have also included a photo of the Milk Fed Lamb Mechoui below (which was enjoyed by my fellow diners) because as you all know I am not the biggest fan of lamb but it looked so good on the plate I had to include it.
My cod was meaty and tasted great but I think for me the stand-out on the plate was the couscous and cauliflower. Whatever the ‘sauce’ covering the couscous was, it was a winner, accentuating the nuttiness and giving another dimension to what can often be a much maligned ingredient.
Dessert was the very filling Cherry and Almond Clafoutis. A generous portion I enjoyed it but it had me beat when combined with all the other lovely plates I had consumed. I could feel a workout calling my name the following morning.
If you are in the area for lunch there is a £10 special on offer – Dish of the day plus a side available Monday thru to Saturday and in the evenings book a table for 4 people and receive a free bottle of wine. Zayane is located at 91 Golborne Rd and is open Mon-Fri 10am-12pm and Sat-Sun 11am-12pm.
