Sway, Holborn – An uber-cool place to get your swag on

Sway Cocktails

Ever on an eternal quest to find new places, here is my latest find. The ultra chic place that is known as Sway is situated in the heart of theatreland, a few minutes from both Covent Garden and Holborn.  Before I went I was told ‘think Meatpacking district meets East London’. I’ve been to NYC but the Meatpacking District wasn’t where you went way back when, I was intrigued. It looks smallish (albeit very stylish) from the outside but don’t let that fool you, this place is huge and there is a separate nightclub downstairs too. Serving up a mix of classic as well as trendy cocktails and some tasty pulled pizzas, this place has recently been revamped and was buzzing with an eclectic mix of patrons.

We were treated to the mixology skills of one of the resident bar staff, creating a variety of very quaffable cocktails that slipped down easily. My favourites were the mai tai and of course the old-fashioned. In a time when bars are going all out to reinvent the cocktail it is good to see somewhere that appreciates the simple classics and does them well. We also tried the new menu which has plenty of tapas style sharing dishes and hand-pulled pizzas. Think back-to-basics rustic pizza with generous toppings. Not too heavy on the dough and a good range to choose from.

After eating in the restaurant and enjoying a couple of drinks you can head downstairs to the nightclub. A decent sized place with stylish décor it has plenty of seating around a central dancefloor and off to the side a ‘selfie’ room. Here you can indulge the craze for taking selfie photos. A black and white checkerboard backdrop filled with positive wording and hashtags on the walls and a huge gilt-edged mirror provided for some interesting group shots.

The £1 million refurbishment of Sway is noticeable from it’s previous incarnation and with a restaurant, bars and club all in one building there is bound to be something for everyone. Whether you are pre or post theatre or looking for a place with a cool vibe to hang out with friends, Sway is  definitely worth a look.
