Tavern at 15 – a members club feel without the membership – London Capital Club – City, London

Tavern At 15 London Capital Club Food

If you’ve ever wondered what it is like to step through the doors of an exclusive members-only club but don’t have the necessaries to justify it, here’s where you can experience it without breaking the bank.

The London Capital Club recently launched their new dining venture Tavern at 15, located in the basement of the Club’s premises on Abchurch Lane. A restaurant whose décor reflects the olde-worlde charm of the club upstairs, it is a little bit special. Comfortably decorated with wooden tables, leather stools at the bar, tasteful artwork and cool lighting displays, it provides a relaxing ambience that is not intimidating in the least. Lunchtimes are the busiest with the quietest time being a Friday night as the City boys hang up their ties for the weekend.

The menu is designed by head chef Jean-Didier (previously of The Royal Albert Hall) and reflects a modern multicultural choice of dishes to suit all palates. There is a good range of starters and the one I really recommend you try is the scotch egg, wrapped in black pudding rather than sausage meat, it was truly delectable. The baked camembert with brioche was meltingly good and the tempura softshell crab was also popular.

We tried various forms of the burgers (en mini) from the mains section. Lamb, three cheese beef and thai chicken. Of these I enjoyed the thai chicken, succulent and tasty I would happily down a full-sized one. The other choices for mains include  Cote De Boeuf, Grilled Sirloin, Monkfish, Scottish Lobster and Corn Fed Chicken. There is not a huge selection for vegetarians in this section but I think a word with the staff would see to an alternative take on one of the aforementioned dishes being sorted out for you by Chef.

A special mention must also be made for the wine list. Featuring some of the best wines from around the world, there is a fabulous selection. The cocktails are also pretty outstanding and the efforts of the talented mixologist made our evening all the more enjoyable. The prices are reasonable especially for a City restaurant. With it’s excellent location, friendly, attentive staff and great food this is a real hidden gem. If you’ve ever been put off about trying a restaurant attached to a private members club all I can say is ‘do it’. You’re sure to be pleasantly surprised.
