What’s been voted the best gin in the world for the ultimate gin and tonic? Read on …..
Introducing the awesome Scandinavian gin distillery, Kyro. The Kyro brand recently had a gin tasting at The Athenaeum on Piccadilly which I was more than happy to attend, especially as gin is my preferred spirit. Firstly it should be noted that Kyro gin is not your average gin distillery. They produce rye gin which has a warmer, spicier profile compared to straight-up gins and is therefore also proving popular with whiskey drinkers. It was to be my first time with a rye gin but as you know, I am ready, willing and able to try new taste adventures!
Kyro Gin – Finland
A very hands-on company, Kyro was first founded by five guys with a shared passion for rye whisky. They say ‘we have grown to be a family full of colourful characters. We share an honest enthusiasm for rye spirits, we are always nice, but do things our way and we firmly believe that the most interesting adventures always lie ahead of us.’ Working with 100% wholegrain rye the gins also contain locally foraged botanicals from right outside the distillery, warm spice from the rye is combined with twelve dry and four freshly distilled botanicals, creating a uniquely local flavour.
Our venue for the night was The Bar at The Athenaeum, recently relocated within the hotel and affording a luxury feel it is one of my favourite hotel bars to while away a few hours especially when it was such gloomy weather outside. The Bar serves two of the available Kyro gins those being the Kyro Koskue Aged Gin and Kyro Napue. I was looking forward to my cocktail gin tasting and after a brief presentation in which we were introduced to the brand and it’s evolvement it was time for the serious part of the evening – cue the gin.
First, straight-up to appreciate the full flavour profile of the Napue. Napue gin was voted as “The World’s Best Gin for Gin & Tonic” by the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) in 2015 and in 2016 Napue won the gold medal in the San Francisco World Spirit Competition premium gin-series. Botanicals include sea buckthorn, cranberries and birch leaves ending with notes of pepper of rye.
Aged in small American white oak barrels, Kyro Koskue has recently won a Gold Medal at the 2017 San Francisco World Spirit Competition and Outstanding Silver in IWSC 2017. It is proving popular with whiskey drinkers too due to the heat from the rye and the hints of vanilla from the barrels. We tried it long with apple juice and plenty of ice, refreshing and with a nice warm kick it will be great on a summer’s night.
Kyro gin is available in all the best hotel bars as well as The Whiskey Exchange and a few other online sites.
